Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out whether YouTube videos are effective in enhancing the speaking skills of junior high school students and to identify which aspects of speaking improve the most. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles. The participants were 12 eighth-grade students from class VIII at SMPK Rosa Mystica Kupang. The instruments used were pre-test, post-test, observation sheets, and lesson plans. The results showed that using YouTube videos is effective in improving students' speaking skills. This can be seen from the increase in the students’ average score from the pre-test (51.64) to the post-test in Cycle II (80.91). Among the four speaking components, fluency showed the highest improvement 56,59%, followed by vocabulary 56,02%, comprehension 51,86%, and pronunciation 49,54%. Students also showed more confidence and participation in classroom speaking activities after being exposed to YouTube videos. The researcher suggests that teachers can use YouTube videos as an engaging medium in teaching speaking, while still giving attention to vocabulary and pronunciation practice before speaking activities. For future researchers, it is recommended to apply similar methods for other English skills or with larger groups for broader insights.
