Abstract

The O Bela chant is one of the traditional artistic expressions that must be passed down, developed, and preserved by the Manggarai community. The O Bela song is usually performed during the Penti ceremony. The Penti ceremony is an important tradition for the people of East Manggarai as a form of gratitude and preservation of customary values, particularly in Torok Golo Village. However, the younger generation's lack of understanding of the meaning behind the O Bela chant performed during the Penti ceremony has become a primary concern. Therefore, this study raises the following problems:1.)What is the form of the O Bela chant in the Penti ritual. 2)What is the meaning of the lyrics contained in the O Bela chant? This study aims to describe:1)The form of the O Bela chant in the Penti ritual, and 2.)The meaning of the lyrics contained in the O Bela chant. The research uses a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this study is qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that:1) The form of the O Bela chant is divided into three stages:1.)Opening stage: All members of the community participating in the O Bela chant take a seated position in a circle before starting the performance.2.)Main stage: In this stage, the community begins to sing the O Bela chant, led by a male figure (cako), accompanied by traditional drums.3.)Closing stage: After the O Bela chant is completed, the Penti ceremony continues, carried out by appointed officials, and concludes with a thanksgiving prayer.1.)The meaning of the O Bela lyrics in the Penti ritual includes:1)As a form of gratitude, 2) As an accompaniment to the traditional ceremonial ritual.
