Abstract

Maumere City in Sikka Regency is home to a rich variety of distinctive local crafts, such as ikat weaving, wood carving, ceramic handicrafts, and jewelry made from natural materials. These works reflect local culture passed down through generations. However, the development of craft arts in Maumere currently faces several challenges, including the lack of supporting facilities, limited adaptation to modern technology, and competition from mass-produced goods. Therefore, a craft arts community center is needed to accommodate and support the activities of local artisans. This building is designed as a modern creative hub that still reflects traditional values, incorporating a contemporary architectural approach that is functional, flexible, and environmentally friendly. This study aims to develop a planning and design concept for a craft arts community center in Maumere by integrating local cultural elements and contemporary architectural principles. The main focus of this research is to create a space that supports exhibitions, training, and collaboration among artists, while also serving as a cultural and tourism attraction. The methods used include primary data collection through observation and interviews, as well as secondary data through literature studies and relevant policy reviews. The results of this research are expected to produce a community center design that not only functions physically as a space for artistic activities but also provides social, cultural, and economic benefits to the people of Maumere. The building will become a symbol of the advancement of local crafts, strengthen cultural identity, and open opportunities for business development and regional tourism. Keywords: Craft arts, Maumere, local culture, ikat weaving, contemporary architecture, community center, creative hub, architectural design, cultural preservation, cultural tourism.
