Abstract

The craft of ikat weaving was originally sourced from hereditary beliefs and became a tradition that could not be abandoned by the people of NTT, especially in the village of Lewokluok, East Flores Regency, who believed that the snakeskin patterned ikat weaving (ula kulikeng) was a protector for the women of the Beribe Tribe. This study aims to explain the role of women in maintaining snakeskin patterned ikat weaving (ula kulikeng) in lewokluok village and the social implications of the activities of ula kulikeng ikat weaving crafters. Informants were 11 members of the ikat weaving group. The author uses qualitative methods, data collection by means of observation, interviews, documentation. Data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing or verification. The results showed that the role of women ikat weaving craftsmen in maintaining snakeskin motifs and their social implications in lewokluok village, demon pagong sub-district, East Flores district has not been fully effective. Group action in making motifs is not carried out due to respect for tradition in the form of maintaining original motifs. The role of craftsmen in spending time and energy in weaving has not been fully effective. Meanwhile, in terms of the social and economic implications of the craftsmen in preserving snakeskin motifs, it can be seen that due to low education they do not innovate motifs, thus the original motifs are maintained either because of fear of tradition or loyalty to tradition.
