Abstract

This study is entitled The meaning of symbolic communication on the ASDP Ferry crossing ship at Bolok-Kupang port (case study on the ASDP Ferry crossing ship at Bolok-Kupang Port). The purpose of this study is to determine the meaning of symbolic communication in the sailing activities of the ASDP Ferry crossing ship at Bolok-Kupang port. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative where researchers collect data through interview techniques, observation, and documentation. This study uses the theory of semiotics, shipping communication and symbolic interaction theory to reveal three things, namely, mind, self and society nonverbally and verbally. Nonverbally, the mind is related to the mind which is formed from the meaning or symbols on the ship. And the self is related to the self, namely where the self is controlled by the mind, because the mind itself understands the symbols. While society is related to society, where society acts or works by doing everything depending on the thoughts and existence of each individual in society. Verbally, the mind is formed from the meaning or symbols themselves on the ship. Self (self) is where the self can be controlled by one's own mind in understanding the meaning of a symbol on a voyage. While society (society) is where society acts based on the thoughts and meaning of symbols on the ship. The results of this study are that symbolic communication has an important role in conveying information, building identity, and maintaining safety and comfort in marine transportation operations. Keywords: Symbolic communication, ASDP Ferry crossing ship, Bolok-Kupang Port, symbolic interaction, semiotics, shipping communication.
