Abstract

Language is a tool used for speaking, writing, and communicating with others. As social beings, humans communicate through language, which serves as a tool for conveying thoughts and building social relationships. This study aims to identify forms of refusal expressions in the Wolowae language and the reasons behind their use. Through qualitative methods, including interviews and observations, involving ten informants aged between nineteen and sixty. The study identifies various strategies employed by speakers, such as the use of expressions such as “ma’e ngasi” (please don’t be angry), “ ma’e ngasi woso” (please don’t be angry), “ kau ngasi woso nga’o ede” ( you’re angry it’s okay) and “nga’o oa ampo” ( I’m sorry) These expressions often include logical reasoning, expressions of gratitude, and topic diversion to maintain politeness and avoid offending the interlocutor.
