Abstract

This thesis aims to know: (1) the management of student character building, (2) the supporting and inhibiting factors, and (3) the solution to cope with problems arising in the management of student character building at Giovanni Catholic Junior High School Kupang. This thesis is a qualitative research. The techniques of data collection are observation, interview, and documentation study. The collected data are analyzed applying data reduction, data presentation and verification. The informants in this study are the school Principal, Vice Principal in Curriculum, Vice Principal in Student Affairs, Vice Principal in Infrastructure, Vice Principal in Public Relation, Religion teacher, Civics Teacher, a Counselor, and 15 students. The findings of this research indicate that the management of students character building is integrated in the three main activities namely in teaching and learning process, in extracuricular activities, in school culture and habits formation. The management of student character building consists of planning, organisation, implementation, and supervision. It is found out that the supporting factors include the internal factor consisting of students’ background, and the external factors such as school vision and school mision, teacher capabilities, stakeholders’ support, planned activity, school culture, students’ school commitment, small number of students, conducive infrastructure and facilities, and a pleasant environment. The inhibiting factors include the internal factors such as students’ background and character differences, and the external factors are home and school culture difference, less supervision for students outside the school, the community social interaction, and social media. Based on these results, it is recommended to stabilize a continuous and steady cooperation among teachers, students, parents and the community to cope with the existing problems.
