Abstract

The underlying question in this research is how the difficulties experienced by students in solving math storyproblems on the material system of linear equations in two variables is in the best interest of junior high school problem solving skills.The main objective of this research isto analyze the difficulties experienced by students in solving math storyproblems on the material system of linear equations in two variables is in thebest interest of junior high school problem solving skiils.This research was conducted in SMP NEGERI 20 Kupang.This type of research is descriptive qualitative techniques of data collection is done by giving the task of problem solving to students. After working on the problem solving were interviewed about the work of the student.In this research selected two students whose math skills are relatively equal and are willing to beinterviewed. The assessment of the difficulties experienced by students in solving a story based on four indicators difficulty in solvingabout the story are: 1) to read and understand the problem, 2) make a mathematical model or a sentence, 3) perform calculations, and 4) draw conclusions from the final calculation. Data analysis in this research is done by reducing the data, presenting data, and making inferences.The results showed that both students with the ability of the same relative has difficulty notrelatively equal, because on stage undergo a second calculation students can not perform calculation properly, the difficulty of the first students at the stage of doing calculations that is on the subtraction and multiplication, while students both in the multiplication, then at the stage of drawing conclusions from the final calculation, the student can not prove the truth of an answer back from the final calculation and did not know at the time proved anew the truth of the answers of the final calculation of what is to be proved.Based on these results, it is expected that teachers pay more attention to students in solving mathematics story especially when performing calculations and draw conclusions from the final calculation and familiarize students to solve story problems that illustrate the problems that often occur in everyday life to make students familiar so when workingabout the story of students already know what to do and are expected to be beneficial as an input to take certain steps to overcome the difficulties experienced by students in solving mathematical word problems.
