Abstract
This study is a qualitative research that aims to describe the profile of the difficulties of junior high school students in solving HOTS questions in terms of students' academic abilities. Students' difficulties in solving HOTS questions consist of three types, namely: difficulties in using concepts, difficulties in using principles, and difficulties in solving verbal problems. The subjects in this study consisted of three students with high, medium, and low academic abilities. Research subjects were also selected according to the results of discussions between mathematics teachers and researchers. Data collection is in the form of HOTS test results and interview results based on indicators of student difficulty. Data analysis includes organizing data obtained from test and interview results, reading data, studying and collecting information in the form of difficulties experienced from mistakes made in doing written tests and from interviews, determining difficulties experienced by students, and presenting data in a narrative manner. Checking the validity of the data using the triangulation method. The results of the study concluded that subjects with high academic abilities had difficulty in solving verbal problems. Subjects with moderate and low academic abilities had difficulty in using mathematical principles and difficulties in solving verbal problems.
