Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the mistakes made by students in solving the problem of the subject of social arithmetic based on the Newman procedure. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Kupang City. The subjects in this study were 3 students of class VII-K, each of which had high, medium and low abilities. The data collection techniques in this study used test, observation and interview techniques. The validity of the data was carried out by time triangulation, namely comparing the results of observations and interviews on question number 1, question number 2, and question number 3 at different times. This study uses error analysis with the Newman procedure, namely errors in reading the questions, errors in understanding the questions, errors in transforming, errors in process skills, and errors in the final answer. The analysis technique is carried out by correcting the work of the research subject in order to analyze the mistakes made by students, analyzing the results of student interviews to see the causes of errors made by students and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that research subject 1 (S1) and research subject 2 (S2) in solving the subject matter of social arithmetic make mistakes in transforming, error processing skills and errors in final answers, while research subject 3 (S3) makes errors in reading questions, errors in understanding the questions, errors in transforming, errors in process skills and errors in the final answer. This shows that the mistakes made by students in solving the subject matter of social arithmetic are in accordance with Newman's procedure.
