Abstract
The topic is specified into two statements of the problems. 1) What types of errors that made by the eighth grade students in SMPN 4 Kupang in writing procedure text that based on surface strategy taxonomy? 2) What is the most frequent type of errors made by eighth grade students in SMPN 4 Kupang in writing procedure text that based on surface strategy taxonomy? The study was concluded in SMPN 4 Kupang. The study was descriptive qualitative research. The data was obtained through the writing task. The obtained data was analyzed through steps of correcting, describing, explaining, calculating, and tabulating the students answer sheet. The result of data analysis is presented formally in tables and informally in verbal description. The scope of this study is the grammatical errors in writing procedure text, but in this study used the surface strategy taxonomy to analyze the students’ grammatical errors, as omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The subject of this study was 20 students of the eighth grade students in SMPN 4 Kupang, in school year 2017/2018. The conclusion of this study based on finding and analyzing of the data, 1) The types of errors that are made by students cover omission errors 41 (63.07%), addition errors, 16 (24.61 %), misformation errors 8 (12.30%), misordering errors 2 (3.7%). The total errors are 65 errors. 2) The most frequent error made by students is omission error. Based on the finding and conclusion some suggestions are offered to the English Teacher, The Students, and The Future Researcher. The English Teacher should be aware on grammatical errors in writing skill, thus they can recognize and pay attention of the errors that are made by students. The students should study more about the English grammatical and writing procedure text because it is very benefit to improve and train their skills. The Future Researcher, based on the result this study can inspire and motivation other researchers to conduct this study.
