Abstract

This study entitled is “A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERROR IN RECOUNT TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMA NEGERI 1 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) What kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in writing recount text? (2) What are the most frequent grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in writing recount text? The objectives of study are as follows (1) to know the kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in writing recount text. (2) To know the most frequent grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in writing recount text. The method used in this study was descriptive method and in collecting the data the writer chose one class science VI of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang which consisted of 40 students as the sample. However, from the 40 students the writer only chose 20 students. In this study the writer used random sampling. The writer asked them to write a recount text from the topics given by the writer such as: Christmas Day, Picnic Day, A holiday at the End of Semester, and Bad Day. The result of this study showed that the kinds of grammatical error committed by the students were omission, addition, misformation and misordering. Based on the result of analysis that the most frequent grammatical errors encountered by the eighth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in writing recount texts were Misformation percentage (69.86%) with the total of errors 51, followed by Addition (20.54%) with the total of errors 15, Omission (6.84 %) with total of errors 5, and Misordering (2.73 %) with the total of errors 2. Based on the result of data analysis the writer would like to purpose some suggestions to the English teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang to give more emphasis on grammatical aspect especially in using simple past tense, subject verb agreement, plural marking, possessive pronouns and preposition because the students are still lack in these parts. For the students, the writer suggests they should learn more about English especially in writing recount texts based on their knowledge and comprehension in using English grammar correctly
