Abstract

This thesis is entitled “THE USE OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL: A CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK SANTA THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Can the use of group discussion be effective to increase speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016? (2) To what extent is the improvement of speaking skill of the eighth grade students after being taught using small group discussion?. (3) What are the problems found when small group discussion is being conducted as classroom activity of eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016? The objectives of the study are: (1) To find out whether or not the implementation of small group discussion can be effective to increase speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. (2) To find out problems found when small group discussion is being conducted in classroom activity of the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Theresia kupang. (3)To know extent the improvement of speaking skill of the eighth grade students after being taught using small group discussion. To do this study the writer used descriptive method. The subject of this study were the eighth grade students in class A. The total number of the students was 26 and the writer choose 10 students to be the respondents of this study. In collecting the data, the writer gave a topic that the writer prepared. The result of the research shows that (1) the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang are able to speak English through small group discussion with good pronunciation, grammatical structure and vocabulary. (2) the problems faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia in speaking are how to use tense and how to put words in correct position and how to pronounce the words correctly. (3) The improvement of speaking skill of the eighth grade students was getting better after being taught using small group discussion and the level of speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang is high advance (4.35). Based on the result of this study, the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follows: The English teacher should give motivation to the passive students since cooperative learning required participant from the student by giving the role in small group discussion. The member of small group discussion should be four to five persons in order to manage the student easily. It will give more chance to each member to express their ideas. (2) Through the result of the study students specifically students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang should take part much acting out in small group discussion.
