Abstract
This study is entitled “Analysis on the writing SMA Negeri Kapan Timor Tengah Selatan Regency”. This study was done to answer the following questions: 1) what is the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Kapan Soe in writing descriptive text? 2) What might be the difficulties found by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Kapan Soe in writing descriptive text? The objectives of the study were 1) To know the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Kapan Soe in writing descriptive text, and 2) To know the difficulties found by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Kapan Soe in writing descriptive text. The method used in this research was a descriptive one, because it was to get the picture of students writing ability. The subjects of this study were 15 students from IPS class. In getting the data the writer made use writing test as the instrument. The students were asked to write down a descriptive text based on their own topics. The time allocation for the test was 90 minutes. The kind of scoring used in evaluating the students’ writing was the analytical method proposed by Nurgiantoro. The range of score was 1 up to 6. The aspects of evaluating are three namely grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The findings of this research indicated that the eleventh grade student’s descriptive writing still contained some errors in grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Based on the findings, the writer can conclude that 1). Although the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Kapan Soe in writing descriptive text but they were able to write descriptive text, their ability level was good (15.53). 2). the difficulties found by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri Kapan Soe in writing descriptive text were grammar (sentence construction, noun), vocabulary (word choice), and mechanics (punctuation, capital letter). Referring to the findings and conclusions, the writer would like to suggest the English teacher and the students. The English teacher needs to give more attention on grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics through descriptive text and other types of texts. For the students, they must learn how to write descriptive text and various texts well.
