Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on The Speaking Ability of the Migrant Workers in PT. Citra Bina Tenaga Mandiri Kupang”. It aims to answer the following questions: (1) Are the migrant workers in PT. Citra Bina Tenaga Mandiri able to speak English related to their jobs? (2) What is their level of speaking ability? (3) What are the areas of difficulties in speaking faced by the migrant workers in PT. Citra Bina Tenaga Mandiri?. The objectives of this study are: (1) To indentify the ability of migrant workers to speak English related to their jobs (2) To know their level of speaking ability (3) To find the the areas of difficulties in speaking that faced by the migrant workers in PT. Citra Bina Tenaga Mandiri. To solve these problems, the writer used descriptive method. The subjects of this study were five migrant workers in PT. Citra Bina Tenaga Mandiri Kupang. The result of this study shows that (1) Migrant workers are able to speak English related to their jobs (2) the speaking ability level of the migrant workers in speaking English related to their jobs is overall 13.4 or “High Advance” and (3) the areas of difficulties in speaking faced by migrant workers are grammatical error especially in the use of “to be” and constructing the interrogative sentence, lack of vocabulary to complete a sentence and wrong pronunciation of some words. Based on the result, the writer gives some suggestions that needed to be considered: (1) For PT. Citra Bina Tenaga Mandiri, even the migrant workers’ ability level is “High Advance” but they still have mistakes in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Therefore, English course have to be taught more intensive and the duration of English course should be added. Not only local language of the target countries as Malay, Chantonis and Mandarin language that get more attention but also English too where English as their lingua franca. (2) For the Migrant workers, good speaking skill in English helps migrant workers smoothen their job abroad. Therefore, migrant workers should pay attention in using English for comunication. By mastering English, their speaking ability will be better and it will bring good influence in their job.
