Abstract

This study is entitled „’A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN USING PREPOSITION OF TIME IN THE SENTENCE OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK SHANTI KARYA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015’’. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Shanti Karya Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to use the preposition of time in English sentences or not? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Shanti Karya Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using the preposition of time? The objectives of the study are: (1) To know the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Shanti Karya Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using preposition of time in English sentence. (2) To know the students‟ levels of ability in using preposition of time in English sentence. In this study the writer used normative survey method because the ability level of the students in using preposition of time is obtained through correction and quantification of the data in form of answer sheets of the students. The study was conducted in SMPK Shanti Karya Kupang. The instrument used in getting the data was a test consisting of multiple choice tests, with the total number of test items was 50. The result of the study shows that (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK Shanti Karya Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 are able to use the preposition of time, (2) The level of ability of the students in using preposition of time is 8.15 which is classified as good. Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to give some suggestions for the English teacher and the students in researched school, (1) For the English teacher: in order to maintain and increase the students‟ ability in using the preposition of time the teacher should give the student more explanations and practices about how to use prepositions in sentences until they master. (2) The students should do more exercises about the use of preposition in sentences. (3) More practices and exercises are needed by the students to use preposition of time (on, in, at, from and to) as preposition in sentence because it is very helpful for the students to enrich their vocabulary and to communicate in English well with other people in their daily life
