Abstract
This study is entitled “A Study on the Effectiveness of Climbing Grammar Mountain to teach Simple Present Tense to the Tenth Grade Students of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui in the School Year 2014/2015.The objective of this study aimed at finding out whether or not climbing grammar mountain is effective to teach simple present tense to the students. This study applied pre experimental study with pretest posttest design. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. The instrument used in this research was a test. Baesd on the result of the observation and the pretest done in class X B of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui on the pre observation, it known that the ability of the students in using Simple Present Tense was low.the student’s mean scoreon the pretest was categorized as average (6,24). This result leads the researcher to do a research by applyng Climbing Grammar Mountain Game in the teaching of simple present tense to improve the student’s ability in using Simple Present Tense. From this result, it could be concluted that Climbing Grammar Mountain Game could improve the ability of the student’s in class XB SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui in using Simple Present Tense of SMAK Sint Carolus Penfui. Based on the result of the study there are some suggestions that can be made by the researcher in the end of this study: (1) To the English Teachers. It is expected that the teacher should use Climbing Grammar Mountain Game as an effective game in improving the students’ ability in using Simple Present Tense, specifically in using subject-verb agreement, adverbs, and usage of Simple Present Tense. (2) To the students. It is suggested that the students should practice more in using Simple Present Tense more intensively not only in written form but also in daily communication. The students can start from making simple sentences and then transform them into another form such as into negative or interrogative form, so that they can improve their proficiency in grammar. (3) To other researchers. It is suggested that another researcher should develop the use of Climbing Grammar Mountain Game to improve the other tenses or even combine this game with other games so that it can make the students more interested in learning grammar.
