Abstract
The title of this research is “A STUDY ON THE USE OF PICTURES IN TEACHING READING TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 8 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. The study was done in order to answer the following problems: (1) Is the use of pictures in teaching reading effective to improve the comprehension of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang? (2) To what extent is the use of picture effective in improving the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school years 2014/2015? The objectives of the study are: (1) To find out whether the use of picture in teaching reading is effective to improve the Comprehension of eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school years 2014/2015. (2) To find out what extent is the use of picture effective in improving the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school years 2014/2015. This study focused on the use of picture in teaching reading especially in narrative text. The subject of this study is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang. The writer chooses class A consisting of 30 students. In obtaining the data for this research, the writer used Classroom Actin Research. Based on the analysis data, the writer concludes that 1) The use of picture is effective in teaching reading particularly the narrative text to the eighth grade students in SMPN 8 Kupang in school years 2014/2015. The results of data analysis showed that there was a significant improvement in the average score of pretest (48,3), post test 1 (75,43) and post test 2 (83,5). It means that there was 72,87% of average scores improvement. 2) There are some significant differences in research of teaching reading by using pictures. The number of students whose score below the school accomplishment standard (KKM) in the pre test was 17 students (56%), while in the post test 1 there was 8 students (26%) and in the post test 2 there was 3 students (10%). It means that the use of picture is effective. However, the writer would like to propose some suggestion as follows: 1) The English teacher should be more serious in helping the students to develop their skill in English especially in Reading comprehension using media picture as an alternative to overcome student’s boredom in learning English, as well as improving their comprehension. 2) students should pay attention on the teacher explanation of reading texts using pictures.
