Abstract

This study is entitled A Study on The Ability in Using Direct and Indirect Speech of The Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 2 Kupang in The School Year 2016/2017. This study was conducted to find the answer of the following questions: (1) What is the ablity level of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in using direct and indirect speech? (2) What is the area of difficulty of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in using direct and indirect speech? The method used in this study is normative survey method. The subject of this study were the eleventh grade of social four department. They were 46 students, but the writer only chose 24 students as the sample of the study. In collecting data the writer used a test that consists of 40 test items which were divided into two parts: The first part is changing direct into indirect speech consistsing of 20 test items, while the second part consists of 20 test items to change indirect into direct speech. The results of the study showed that the ability level of students are as follow: Four (16.67%) students got bad ability level (1.6 – 2.5), three (12.5%) students got very poor ability level (2.6 – 3.5), four (16.67%) student got poor ability level (3.6 – 4.5), six (25%) students got bellow average ability level (4.6 – 5.5), two (8.33%) students got average ability level (5.6 – 6.5), three (12.5%) students got fairly good ability level (6.6 – 7.5), two (8.33%) students got good ability level (7.6 – 8.5), there is no student got very good ability and excellent ability level (9.6 – 10). The areas of difficulties faced by the students are less understanding of English grammar. The difficulty encountered by the students occured in tenses, personal pronouns, and another change such as command and questions into direct and indirect speech. Based on the results of the data above, it can be concluded that the level of students ability is categorized as bellow average 4.76. Based on the conclusion from data above the writer would like to give some suggestions as follows: (1) Students need to improve their ability in understanding of grammar, so they can use direct and indirect speeches, particularly to apply the formula to change direct into indirect speech. (2) The teacher of English, especially at the researched school should use an approach and provide more practice to increase students understanding of learning grammar especially on the rules of changing direct and indirect speech.
