Abstract

Tablature (tabulation), or commonly known as TAB, is one of the ways of writing musical notations besides numeric notation and sheet notation. In guitar music instrument learning, TAB notation is easier to understand and quicker to grasp than sheet notation and numeric notation, as TAB notation represents the frets and guitar strings. The aim of this research is to understand the process of guitar tablature learning and the supporting factors in the guitar tablature learning process for students in the Music Education Study Program FKIP – UNWIRA Kupang. This research uses a qualitative approach with an action research method. Data is collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research data is processed descriptively qualitatively. This action research was conducted in six meetings, starting with the introduction of TAB and song models, followed by rhythmic exercises. The training process in each meeting always begins with warm-up and then proceeds with exercises in each measure, starting from slow to fast tempo. The guitar tablature learning process for students faced some difficulties, but the researcher managed to overcome them by applying cybernetic learning methods. The researcher informed the research subjects of the research objectives, followed by memory triggering. This method was repeated in the learning of materials and practice in the next meetings. The researcher guided each research subject in every training process, actively providing feedback on learning outcomes, evaluating failures and successes. At the end of the 6th meeting, the guitar tablature learning showed quite good results where all research subjects mastered the competency level indicated by the ability to play the guitar with the Gunslinger Song model.
