Abstract

Technological advances in the field of automation and robotics have a positive impact in overcoming the problem of flood disasters, especially in tropical areas such as Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based flood detection prototype as a preventive effort to reduce the adverse effects of flooding in Malacca Province, particularly in the West Malacca and Central Malacca regions. The methodology used is a prototype model that allows system developers, designers, and end users to see and experiment with the development process from scratch. The prototype is equipped with two sensors: an ultrasonic sensor to detect water level and a soil moisture sensor to detect soil moisture. Tests have confirmed that both sensors function correctly with 100% accuracy according to the specified parameters. The system notifies the public of the warning output in the form of SMS and buzzer that activates when potential flooding is detected. Nevertheless, this research offers suggestions for further development, including the use of better sensors to improve accuracy, customisation of site-specific power supplies and consideration of more economical alternatives to the SMS gateway medium. Thus, this research contributes to flood disaster mitigation efforts through innovative technological approaches.
