Abstract

This study is a qualitative research that aims to analyse junior high school students' understanding of mathematical concepts in solving mathematics problems. The subjects in this study consisted of three students with high, medium, and low mathematical abilities. The subjects of this study were also selected based on the results of the recap of daily adventure scores, and also the results of discussions with mathematics teachers. Data collection was in the form of concept understanding test results and interview results based on indicators of understanding of mathematical concepts. Data analysis includes exposure to data validation and drawing conclusions. Checking the validity of the data using time triangulation. The results of data exposure and analysis provide conclusions that (1) subjects with high mathematics ability are able to complete concept understanding tests and fulfil all three indicators of concept understanding, namely indicators of interpreting, comparing, inferring. (2) subjects with medium mathematics ability were able to complete the concept understanding test and fulfil all three indicators, namely interpreting, comparing, inferring. (3) subjects with low mathematics ability were able to complete the concept understanding test and only fulfilled two indicators of concept understanding, namely interpreting, and inferring indicators. And on the indicator of comparing low subjects were unable to provide answers. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the mathematical ability to solve mathematics problems to measure concept understanding.
