Abstract

The bending technique is a way of playing the guitar by pushing or pulling the strings upward or downward to produce a pitch change. Meanwhile, the vibrato technique is performed by repeatedly vibrating the string on a single note, resulting in a distinctive vibrational effect or pitch modulation. The problem found among the guitar concentration students of the Music Education Study Program is that they are not yet able to apply the bending and vibrato techniques optimally. The main research questions in this study are: (1) How can the electric guitar playing skills using bending and vibrato techniques in the song “So Far Away” be improved? (2) What are the obstacles and solutions in improving electric guitar playing skills using bending and vibrato techniques in the song “So Far Away”? The objectives of this study are: (1) To understand the process of applying electric guitar bending and vibrato techniques in the song “So Far Away”; (2) To improve the technical ability of students in performing bending and vibrato techniques in the song “So Far Away” on the electric guitar. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation with students concentrating on guitar in the Music Education Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University, Kupang. The results of this study show that: (1) The implementation of drill and imitation methods proved effective; (2) Student progress developed through stages-from the 1st to the 5th meeting, students were introduced to the basic concepts and techniques of bending and vibrato. From the 6th to the 10th meeting, students began applying the techniques within the context of the song “So Far Away.”
