Abstract

This research aimed to describe the learning difficulties of class VIII students of Kupang 1 Public Junior High School in solving linear equation problems. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach designed to find out the description of students' difficulties in solving math problems on the subject of straight line equations. Data collection was carried out using written tests and interviews. The questions used to see the difficulties of students are straight line equation questions totaling 4 questions consisting of 2 questions for the first test and 2 questions for the second test because the data validity test in this research uses a time triangulation technique. Interviews were conducted to further explore the difficulties experienced by students in solving straight line equations. The data is then analyzed through the data reduction stage, the data presentation stage, and drawing conclusions. Based on the processed data, students can be said to have difficulty learning concepts because (1) they do not understand the concepts contained in straight-line equations, (2) students forget formulas about straight-line equations, (3) students do not understand the formulas that have been taught by teachers who are shown to be wrong in using the formula. Meanwhile students are said to have difficulty in principle when students make mistakes in performing number operations, and students lack mastery of the basics of algebra so that they cannot simplify equations. Students are said to have skill difficulties when students have difficulty understanding questions in the form of story questions and are unable to convert story questions into mathematical models and are unable to write down the correct answers.
