Abstract
This study aims to describe junior high school students' understanding of mathematical concepts in terms of learning independence. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative with the subject being 2 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 20 Kota Kupang who have high learning independence. The instruments used in this study were problem solving assignments, interviews, and self-directed learning questionnaires. Data collection was carried out through independent learning questionnaires, problem solving assignments, and interviews. The data analysis technique used is data reduction and drawing conclusions. Indicators of understanding mathematical concepts in research are restating a concept, giving examples and not examples, and using certain procedures or procedures or operations. The results showed that subjects with high learning independence were able to fulfill all indicators. Thus it is hoped that in the implementation of learning in the classroom, teachers need to pay attention to students' ability to understand mathematical concepts.
