Abstract

This research is entitled "A Study on the Strategies used by the English Teachers at SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in Giving Compliments in English". This research was conducted to find answers to questions, namely what are the compliments strategies used by English teachers at SMPK Santa Familia in giving compliments? And what are the functions of the compliments given by the English teachers? The method used in this research is qualitative method. By using two instruments, namely DCT (Discourse Completion Test), and class observation. The purpose of this study was to find out the strategies used by English teachers at SMPK Santa Familia in giving compliments. The participants in this study were 2 English teachers at SMPK Santa Familia Kupang. They were asked to respond to 15 different situations that had been prepared by the author. The author uses Holmes' theory which classifies the types of compliments strategies, namely direct and indirect compliments strategies. This study shows that there are two types of compliments strategies used by English teachers at SMPK Santa Familia, namely direct and indirect compliments strategies. This study also shows that the function of compliments given by the teacher to students is very important in the classroom which can increase student enthusiasm for learning.
