Abstract

This research aims to describe the meaning and function of soka songs at the sepa api doko traditional ceremony in Langagedha village, Bajawa District, Ngada Regency. This research used qualitative research with a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through interviews and documentation in the form of photos.The subjects in this research where traditional leaders, Langagedha village heads and the comnunity. Data analysis used a qualitative descriptive model to obtain clear and accurate conclusions. The data analysis process begins by reviewing all data obtained from various sources, namely as obsevations and interviews as well as recordings of songs and documentation through photography or drawings. Soka is one of the important songs in the sepa api doko ceremony,a ritual request to kill pests on local plantations from the ancestors by the people of Langagedha village,Ngada distric,Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. The meaning and function of soka in the sepa api doko ceremony for society is very little understood by the current generation and women are not even derectly involved in this ceremony. This fact is an interesting phenomenon to study.The result show that meaning and function of soka in the sepa api doko ceremony is as a means of requesting the ancestors to kill the pests that attack the community's plantations. Soka in the sepa api doko ceremony has several subs, including: (1) the stages of the sepa api doko ritual (2) the process of presenting the sepa api doko (3) the meaning of Soka (4) the performer of Soka singing (5) the time and place of the soka singing process (6) clothing used in Soka singing in the sepa api doko ceremony. The research result regarding the function of soka singing consist of: (1) ritual function (2) as a means of education and communication (3) entertainment function.
