Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMAN I Kupang n the school year 2018/2019 able to write recount text?. (2) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMAN I Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing recount text? The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMAN I Kupang(class X MIPA 4). The total of number of class X MIPA 4 was 36 students but the writer only chose 20 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writing task ( writing a recount text). The collected data were analyzed on four aspects of writing, namely; generic structure, grammar, vocabulary, and form. The result of this study shows that: ( 1) The tenth grade students of SMAN I Kupang are able to write recount text with the level of ability was classified as “ VERY GOOD” ( 13,55). (2) That there were 2 students (10%) getting the highest score 16-18 ( excellent). There were 4 students (20%) getting score 10-12 ( good), and 14 students (70%) getting score 13-15 ( very good). While there was any student getting average, below average and bad. Based on the result above the writer suggests the following : (1) The students of SMAN I Kupang should practise the grammar especially the use of “ to be” for non-verbal sentences in writing recount text. (2) The students need to enrich themselves by mastering English vocabulary more in order to write a recount text.
