Abstract

Thisstudy was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the tenth gradestudents of SMA Negeri 1 Adonara Barat able to write a narrative text? (2) Whatis the level of ability of tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Adonara Barat inwriting a narrative text? The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To find outwhether or not the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Adona Barat able towrite a narrative text. (2) To find out the level of ability of the tenth gradestudents of SMA Negeri 1 Adona Barat in writing narrative text. The methodused in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give orexplain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The subject ofthis study was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Adonara Barat (classX/IBB2). The total number of class X/IBB2 was 20 but the writer only analyzed 15students, because 5 students didn’t join the test. The instrument used in this studywas a writing test. The collected data were analyzed and scored based on the fiveaspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, fluency and form. Inanalyzing and scoring the students writing, the writer uses the analytic method byJohn Anderson. The result of this study shows that; (1) The tenth grade studentsof SMA Negeri 1 Adonara Barat in the school year 2019/2020 were able to writea narrative text. (2) The level of ability was classified as “Good” (23.9). There isno student who got the highest score 30 (Excellent). However there are 4 students(26.7%) who get score 25 – 29 (Very Good). there are 11 students (73.3%) whoget score 20 – 24 (Good). There is no student who gets 15 – 19 (Average), 10 – 14(Below Average) and 5 – 9 (Bad). There are many errors made by the students,they are grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling. Therefore the writersuggests the English teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Adonara Barat to pay moreattention on the teaching of grammar especially tenses, subject verb agreement,choice of word, punctuation and spelling
