Abstract

This research is entitled: An Analysis on the Expressions of Gratitude’s and Responses Uttered by the Characters in the Pursuit of Happiness movie. This study aims to explore the strategies of gratitude expressions and responses used the characters in the “The Pursuit of Happiness” movie. Applying descriptive qualitative method, the research data was collected by watching the movie repeatedly using a mobile phone, followed by dialog transcription and subjective observation of scenes featuring the characters' interactions. The results show that, the most frequently used gratitude expression strategy is “Thanking” with a percentage rate of (65.45%). The gratitude expressions strategies with the lowest percentage are “Repayment”, “Positive Feeling “and “Other” with a percentage of (1.81%). The findings of this study also demonstrate that the most frequently used gratitude response was “Minimizing the Favor” with a percentage rate (50%) and the lowest percentage of gratitude response was “Expressing Pleasure” with a percentage rate (8.3%). Based on the percentage numbers obtained, it can be concluded that the gratitude expressions strategies and responses with the highest percentage numbers indicate that these strategies are often used by the characters in the movie. While the strategy with the lowest percentage number indicates that, the strategy is rarely used by the characters in the movie. This study suggests that future research can expand the scope of analysis by involving more films and characters to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the expression of gratitude in different cultural contexts. Moreover, English Education is also encouraged to include pragmatic and sociolinguistic aspect of English language.
