Abstract

Film plays a significant role in conveying messages, ideas, and concepts to the public in a broad and rapid manner. One of the recurring issues addressed in films is ethnic stereotyping. In Indonesia, the representation of certain ethnic groups particularly those from Eastern Indonesia remains often biased and inaccurate. This group rarely receives space in mainstream media, and when they do appear, they are frequently associated with negative stereotypes. The film Kaka Boss, directed by Arie Kriting, stands out as it portrays the lives of Eastern Indonesians through a more humanistic and diverse lens within a comedy-drama framework. This study aims to analyze the ethnic stereotypes of Eastern Indonesians in the film Kaka Boss using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. A qualitative descriptive method is employed. Data were collected through observation and documentation of scenes that contain stereotypical signs, both verbal and non-verbal. The data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Barthes’ semiotic theory is applied to interpret the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings of the signs found in the film. The results show the presence of negative stereotypes such as being aggressive, harsh, and intimidating, as well as positive ones such as being humble, morally upright, supportive, and forgiving. The film does not merely reproduce stereotypes, but also presents a counter-narrative that is more nuanced and fair. Therefore, Kaka Boss serves as a reflective medium for understanding the representation of Eastern Indonesian ethnic groups in a more balanced and inclusive manner.
