Abstract

Tanis Sarebak is a traditional chant rich in emotion and cultural heritage. The Good Friday Lament (Tanis Sarebak), as one of the significant moments in the Catholic liturgical calendar, carries deep emotional characteristics, focusing on expressions of sorrow and sacrifice. The problems addressed in this study are: (1) What is the role of Tanis Sarebak in the Good Friday service at KUB Malaikat Agung Ailomea, Saint Peter Parish Lahurus, Lasiolat District, Belu Regency. (2) What is the musical form of the Tanis Sarebak chant during the Good Friday celebration at KUB Malaikat Agung Ailomea, Saint Peter Parish Lahurus, Lasiolat District, Belu Regency? The objectives of this research are: (1) To describe the role of Tanis Sarebak in the Good Friday service at KUB Malaikat Agung Ailomea, Saint Peter Parish Lahurus, Lasiolat District, Belu Regency, and (2) To examine the musical form of the Tanis Sarebak chant during the Good Friday celebration in the same setting.This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings show that the Tanis Sarebak chant plays a role in raising awareness of life, building a relationship with God, understanding that earthly life is temporary, and reinforcing Christian teachings as a guide. The Tanis Sarebak chant takes the form of a lament and recitative song, characterized by motifs, phrases, dynamics, and expressions that emerge from feelings of sorrow. In terms of lyrics, the song reflects the suffering of Jesus Christ up to His death on the cross. The messages conveyed in the lyrics include life awareness, closeness to God, the temporality of life, a call to repentance, higher spiritual consciousness, and a commitment to following Catholic teachings in order to receive blessings and salvation. Based on the results, it can be concluded that this research makes a significant contribution to the study of preserving local culture and strengthening the identity of local wisdom.
