Abstract

This study is entitled "The Strategies of Apology in English Used by the EFL Learners in Kupang City” This study was conducted to find the answers of two questions. (1).What strategies of apology used by the third semester students of English Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang? (2).What was the most common strategy of apology used by the third semester students of English Study Program of Unwira? The method used in this study was the quantitative method. The subject of the study was students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang. The participants were 20 students who were selected. They were asked to respond to 10 used of apology strategies. The instrument used by the writer to compile data was the DCT (Discourse Completion Test). Next, the researcher made a DCT which was then given to the respondent. The researcher copied the data obtained after collecting the DCT, and then the researchers classified, quantified, and analyzed the data. The strategies of apology used by the third semester students of English Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University are: a) Expression of Apology was used by 20 participants (28%). b). Explanation or Account of The Situation was used by 23 participants (36%). c). Acknowledgement of Responsibility was used by 17 participants (25%). d). An Offer of Repair was used by 8 participants (20%). The most common strategy of apology used by the third semester students of English Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University is “An Explanation or Account of The Situation” this strategy was used by 23 (38%) participants. There are some suggestions offered by the writer, they were; 1). For the students are suggested to learn more about the strategies of apology so they can use them accurately. 2). For other researchers are suggested to conduct similar studies by taking more participants so they can come up with more varied strategies.
