Abstract

The cultural traditions found on Timor Island can be seen in various traditional ceremonies and dances. This research focuses on one particular dance, the Oko Mama dance. Given that the Oko Mama dance is on the brink of extinction, the researcher aims to delve deeper into the form of the Oko Mama dance performance in Tuafanu Village, Kualin District, South Central Timor Regency, and to analyze the meaning of the Oko Mama dance in Tuafanu Village, Kualin District, South Central Timor Regency. The method used in this research is ethnographic, utilizing a qualitative approach. The results of the research indicate that the form of the Oko Mama dance is used to welcome guests or visitors to the Dawan community during important events, such as guest receptions, engagements, weddings, and harvest thanksgiving. The Oko Mama dance is not performed arbitrarily but during specific ceremonies. To analyze the Oko Mama dance further, it is found that the meaning of the Oko Mama dance symbolizes togetherness through the dance in everyday life. The form of the Oko Mama dance is performed to welcome guests or kings visiting the community during important events. As a sign of respect to the king, the community must welcome the king with this dance as a symbol of the familiarity of the Atoin Pah Meto (Timor people). The Oko Mama dance shows the familiarity of the Dawan community with visiting guests. The meaning of the Oko Mama dance symbolizes togetherness through the dance in everyday life. The Oko Mama dance is one of the ways the Dawan community preserves Dawan culture and identity by continually maintaining and passing it down from generation to generation to keep cultural values alive and known to future generations.
