Abstract

The problem in this research is "how to understand the mathematical concepts of junior high school students about number patterns" This study aims to describe the students' mathematical conceptual understanding of the pattern of the field. This type of research is: qualitative descriptive research. The subjects in this study were 2 students in class VIII of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang City with high and medium ability who were selected based on the results of the tests and therecommendations of mathematics teachers from the school.Data collection methods namely: provision of concept understanding tests and interviews. The test used is a test of understanding mathematical concepts in material number patterns. The data collected was then analyzed using the miles and Huberman analysis method (Sugiyono 2013), namely: data reduction, clarification stage, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that: understanding students' mathematical concepts on MT subjects in solving problems able to understand, able to express things that are known and asked and able to conclude the results of their work well. While TL subjects in solving problems are able to understand, able to express things that are known and asked and able to conclude the results of their work well, but to explain back the results of their work MT subjects can explain well but TL subjects in their explanations are less precise.Based on the description above, it can be said that both MT and TL subjects are able to meet the three indicators of understanding the mathematical concepts specified for TPM I and TPM II.
